Description
Purpose

When sampling the soil the following aims are pursued: to define the average nutritious status and degree of its variability on a site. The correct use of fertilizers based on exact information on levels of content of nutrients of the soil on sites leads to increase in a harvest, reduction of cost and decrease in ecological influence. Knowing changes in the content of nutrients on a site, it is possible to introduce mineral fertilizers, considering this variability.

Definition of a method of sampling

With development of technologies and procedures for use of fertilizers producers can collect necessary amount of information about change of amount of nutrients in the soil within the field. Before selection implementation, decide how the obtained information on use of fertilizers will be used, and it will help to define what samples have to be selected. For uniform introduction of fertilizer, select soil samples randomly within the chosen site. If you plan to introduce fertilizers in in advance planned places, the sample of the soil needs to be selected in certain zones of introduction or in squares with the known coordinates.

Uniform application of fertilizers

Even if fertilizer will be introduced uniformly, it will be still useful to have information concerning variability in the content of nutrients of the soil on a site. The knowledge of it will allow you to regulate norms, time of introduction and a type of fertilizer. Select soil samples from sites within the field which are rather uniform. These sites can be defined, based on soil type, a relief, degree of an erosion, field history, distinction in productivity and any other factors which can influence the level of nutrients in the soil.

Avoid 'dead' sites in the field (bald-headed sites, sites of turn of cars, the abandoned places or platforms for sagination of animals), or select from them separate samples. Soil samples from these sites can differ considerably by results from other part of the field. Selecting samples from the irrigated sites of the field for definition of residual nitrate nitrogen, select them from the top, average and lower parts of the field. The amount of irrigation water which is absorbed to the soil will influence quantity and depth of washout of nitrate nitrogen in the soil.

Change of norms of the applied fertilizers

There are two main approaches to sampling for a certain site where application of fertilizers - implementation of selection on a grid or on the basis of division of the field into zones is planned. Both approaches provide full obtaining detailed information on change of level of nutrients within the field. Sampling on a grid more expensive and labor-consuming, but will allow to obtain useful information to change norms of application of fertilizers within several years.
