Chamotte (fr. chamotte) — the refractory clay or a kaolin burned before loss of plasticity, removal of chemically connected water and this or that extent of agglomeration. Sometimes chamotte call also some other initial materials for production of ogneupor burned for the purpose of an okuskovaniye of powders (it is frequent in mix with clay) and stabilization of properties of material (high-aluminous, corundum, tsirkonovy "chamotte").
In practice of art ceramics chamotte often call plastic weight on the basis of clays of different structure with addition of 30-40% of actually shamotny crumb fineness of 0,2-2,5 mm, and also the finished burned products from this weight: shamotny vases.
Chamotte is received roasting (mainly at 1300 — 1500 °C) in the rotating, mine or other furnaces of initial raw materials in the form of the natural pieces or briquettes prepared on tape, valtsevy and other pressa. Extent of agglomeration of chamotte is characterized by water absorption which usually makes from 2 — 3 to 8 — 10% (for "nizkozhzhyonny" chamotte of 20 — 25%).
After crushing and crushing chamotte is applied as otoshchayushchy (reduction of plasticity and shrinkage when drying and roasting) a component of shamotny masses at formation of products (or, respectively, high-aluminous and other ogneupor), production of mertel, torkret-masses, as filler of fire-resistant concrete, etc.
