The tungsten not melting electrodes happen:
a) with thorium oxide:
Description: The tungsten electrode the WT - 20 Type - is intended for welding carbonaceous, low - alloyed and stainless steels, the titan, copper and their alloys on a direct current of DC.
The tungsten electrode of WT - 20, with thorium dioxide mix addition, is applied at argonodugovy welding thanks to high refractoriness of alloy of tungsten (it remains firm even at an incandescence until red). The electrode of WT - 20 is not melting and is used together with an additive wire. Tungsten electrodes of WT - 20 differ in easy start - up of an arch both in the argon environment, and in the helium environment, low tendency to prozhiga, a steady arch, tungsten the welded seam almost does not pollute, however vapors and the dust which is formed when sharpening can negatively influence health of workers and state of environment.
b) with lanthanum oxide:
Description: The tungsten electrode the WL - 20 Type - is intended for welding of stainless steels and aluminum. Welding by an alternating and direct current of AC/DC.
Electrodes from tungsten alloy with oxide of lanthanum have very easy initial start of an arch, low tendency to prozhiga, a steady arch and the excellent characteristic of repeated ignition of an arch. Addition of 1 - 2% of oxide of lanthanum increases the maximum current, wear of an electrode is 50% less than at a pure tungsten electrode. Lanthanum electrodes are more durable and pollute a welding seam less. Oxide of lanthanum is evenly distributed on electrode length that allows to keep a long time when welding initial sharpening of an electrode. This serious advantage when welding on constant (direct polarity) or alternating current from the improved sources of welding current, staly and stainless steels. When welding on alternating sinusoidal current the working end of an electrode has to have spherical shape.
