Monoatomic primary fatty alcohols from a long chain call more than four carbon atoms fatty alcohols. In the nature connections with even number of carbon atoms meet almost only.
Cetearyl alcohol (Cetearyl Alcohol) has special value for prescription practice and preparation of the plastic structured systems. It is about mix of cetyl and stearyl alcohols of variable structure. Trade cetyl stearyl alcohol represents a firm product which usually consists for 70% of stearyl alcohol (C18) and for 30% of cetyl alcohol (C16).
Cetearyl alcohol is steady against effect of oxygen of air and light and is not subject to autooxidation. It does not collapse acids and alkalis. When heating cetearyl alcohol melts in the range of 48-59 C with formation of transparent colourless liquid. This mix of fatty alcohols does not possess the pronounced emulsifying properties, but improves ability of absorption of water bases of creams and ointments. It increases viscosity of emulsion systems like oil/water, and thereby and their stability regardless of value rn. Therefore cetearyl alcohol often serves as the factor regulating a consistence for cosmetic and pharmaceutical drugs.
It is entered into a fat phase at preparation of a product.
